Everything You Need to Know About NAATI Translation

What is NAATI and why do I need a NAATI translation?
NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) is Australia's only national standards and accreditation body for translators and interpreters, operating since 1977. Most Australian government bodies, including the Department of Home Affairs, courts, and transport authorities, require documents in languages other than English to be translated by a NAATI certified translator. A NAATI certified translation includes the translator's official stamp, signature, and NAATI certification number.
How much does NAATI translation cost?
The cost of NAATI translation depends on the language, document type, page count, and formatting complexity. Standard single-page documents such as birth certificates and driver licences are typically the most affordable. Submit your documents for a free, no-obligation quote with estimated delivery time.
Do I need NAATI certified translation for immigration?
Yes. The Australian Department of Home Affairs requires that all documents not in English be translated by a NAATI certified translator for visa and immigration applications. This includes birth certificates, marriage certificates, police clearances, academic transcripts, and any supporting evidence. NAATI certified translations include the translator's stamp, signature, and NAATI certification number.
How long does NAATI translation take?
Standard documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, and driver licences typically take 1-2 working days. Larger or more complex documents may take longer depending on length and language. Urgent services are available on request for time-sensitive applications.
Where are NAATI translations accepted in Australia?
NAATI certified translations are accepted by the Department of Home Affairs (immigration and visa applications), state and federal courts, universities and educational institutions, Centrelink, Medicare, state transport authorities (Service NSW, VicRoads, TMR), banks and financial institutions, AHPRA, Engineers Australia, and all Australian government agencies.
Can I translate my own documents if I speak English fluently?
No. Self-translated documents are not accepted for official purposes in Australia. Government agencies, courts, and immigration authorities require translations to be completed by an independent NAATI certified translator who can provide an official certification statement with their NAATI credentials.
Do I need to send my original documents?
No. We only require a clear photo or scan of your documents. You can upload them directly through our secure form. We provide a fully digital service — you receive your certified translation as a high-resolution PDF via email, which is accepted by all Australian authorities.
Does a NAATI translation expire?
A NAATI certified translation is generally valid as long as the original document remains current. For example, a translated birth certificate does not expire, but a translated driver licence may need updating if the licence itself expires and is renewed with new details.
Is a digital NAATI-stamped PDF legally valid?
Yes. A high-resolution PDF featuring the translator's digital NAATI stamp, signature, and certification statement is accepted by the Department of Home Affairs, universities, courts, and all state and federal authorities in Australia. Hard copy postage is also available on request.
Which documents need NAATI translation for a visa application?
The Department of Home Affairs requires NAATI certified translations for any non-English document submitted with a visa application. Common documents include birth certificates, marriage certificates, police clearance certificates, academic transcripts, employment references, bank statements, and identity documents such as passports and national ID cards.
Do I need NAATI translation for Partner Visa evidence?
Yes. For Partner Visa applications (subclasses 820/801 and 309/100), any relationship evidence not in English must be translated by a NAATI certified translator. This includes joint bank statements, shared lease agreements, correspondence, and statutory declarations written in a language other than English.
Is NAATI translation required for Skills Assessments?
Yes. Most assessing authorities for skilled migration, including Engineers Australia, VETASSESS, ACS, and ANMAC, require academic transcripts, degree certificates, and employment references to be translated by a NAATI certified translator if the originals are not in English.
Can I use a translation obtained overseas?
The Department of Home Affairs requires that translations be prepared by a NAATI certified translator. Translations prepared overseas by non-NAATI translators may not be accepted. To avoid delays with your application, we recommend using an Australian-based NAATI certified translator.
What is the difference between NAATI Certified and Recognised?
NAATI Certified Translators have passed a NAATI certification exam and hold current credentials. NAATI Recognised Translators operate in language pairs where no NAATI certification test is available. Both are accepted by Australian authorities. Our translators hold the highest available NAATI credential for their language pair.
