- There are approximately 10.7 million native speakers worldwide.
- Czech is the official language of the Czech Republic and is one of the official languages of the European Union.
- The Czech diacritical system, using háček (caron) marks over consonants, was invented by the religious reformer Jan Hus in the 15th century and later influenced the orthographies of many other languages.
- Czech has one of the most complex case systems among European languages, with seven grammatical cases for nouns, adjectives, and pronouns.
- The Czech language contains the phoneme ř (voiced alveolar fricative trill), a sound extremely rare among world languages.
- Czech and Slovak are mutually intelligible to a high degree, owing to their shared history within Czechoslovakia (1918-1993) and close linguistic relationship.
- Czech migration to Australia occurred primarily after World War II and during the Cold War, particularly after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. The community numbers around 20,000, with concentrations in Melbourne and Sydney. Czech Australians maintain cultural ties through Sokol gymnastics clubs, cultural associations, and periodic festivals.
About Acacia Ridge
Acacia Ridge is a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Acacia Ridge is 15 kilometres (9 mi) south of the central business district. The population in the 2001 census was 6648. Primarily residential, Acacia Ridge is also known for its heavy industrial area in the suburb's east, occupying much of the suburb's area east of Beaudesert Road. Acacia Ridge is home to one of Brisbane's few ice skating rinks. The suburb was established after the Second World War to house returning servicemen and their families. Many of the original post-war dwellings still stand today.
From 1966 until the mid-1980s, Acacia Ridge accommodated one of Holden's main vehicle manufacturing plants, producing full-sized models and smaller models including the Holden Gemini. Once production ceased of the locally produced Gemini, the manufacturing plant closed down. The manufacturer remained, retaining a small area of the site for its regional headquarters until the early 2000s, when it relocated to Murarrie. Since closure of the plant, Woolworths occupied the area, utilising its space as a regional distribution centre until recently, when an independent retail grocery chain resumed the site for similar purposes.
