    The French Language

    • French is natively known as Français and belongs to the Indo-European, Romance, Gallo-Romance language family.
    • There are approximately 80 million native, 280 million total speakers worldwide.
    • French is an official language in 29 countries across five continents and one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
    • French was the dominant language of international diplomacy from the 17th century until the mid-20th century, and many diplomatic terms remain French (attache, communique, detente, rapport).
    • The Academie Francaise, established in 1635, has been the official authority on French language matters for nearly 400 years, actively working to preserve the language from foreign influence.
    • Africa is home to the majority of the world's French speakers, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo having the largest French-speaking population of any country.
    • French spelling has remained conservative, preserving many letters from Latin and Old French that are no longer pronounced, making its orthography notably more complex than its spoken form.
    • French speakers in Australia come from diverse origins including France, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Mauritius, various African nations, Canada, Belgium, and Lebanon. The French-born population numbers around 30,000, but the total French-speaking community is much larger. Alliance Francaise branches operate in every major Australian city, and French is one of the most studied foreign languages in Australian schools.
