    The Burmese Language

    • Burmese is natively known as မြန်မာစာ and belongs to the Sino-Tibetan, Tibeto-Burman, Lolo-Burmese language family.
    • There are approximately 33 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Burmese is the official language of Myanmar (Burma) and uses the Myanmar script, a rounded script descended from the Brahmi script of ancient India.
    • The circular shapes of the Myanmar script are thought to have evolved because writing was traditionally done on palm leaves, where straight lines would tear the leaves.
    • Burmese is a tonal language with four tones: low, high, creaky, and checked, each changing the meaning of otherwise identical syllables.
    • The language has a complex system of honorifics and particles that indicate the speaker's social relationship to the listener, with different forms for monks, elders, and peers.
    • Burmese script can also be used to write other languages of Myanmar, including Shan, Mon, and Karen, with additional characters.
    • Myanmar-born Australians number over 40,000, with migration accelerating due to political persecution, the Rohingya crisis, and the 2021 military coup. Communities are concentrated in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, comprising diverse ethnic groups including Burmese (Bamar), Karen, Chin, Kachin, and Rohingya.

    About Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill is a suburb of Brisbane, Australia which is located 7 km south-west of the Brisbane CBD. It is primarily a residential suburb, consisting of mostly detached housing. There has been a trend towards townhouse and small lot developments during the last decade. Chapel Hill is currently undergoing a 'major suburban renovation', with many of the original houses (built in the 1970s to 1990s) being demolished or renovated to make way for newer houses, or lot divisions. Currently, there are no apartment buildings in Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill has a large amount of bushland in and around the suburb including Mount Coot-tha. At the 2011 Australian census the suburb had a population of 10,168.

Moggill Road is the major road through Chapel Hill connecting it to the suburbs of Indooroopilly to the east, and Kenmore to the west. The Western Freeway allows quick access to the suburb from around Brisbane.
