    The Lithuanian Language

    • Lithuanian is natively known as Lietuvių kalba and belongs to the Indo-European, Balto-Slavic, Baltic, Eastern Baltic language family.
    • There are approximately 3 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Lithuanian is widely considered the most archaic living Indo-European language, preserving features of Proto-Indo-European that other languages lost thousands of years ago.
    • The language retains a complex system of noun declension with seven cases and two numbers, and verb conjugation with multiple tenses and moods.
    • Lithuanian has a rich tradition of folk songs (dainos) that have been inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
    • The first Lithuanian book, a catechism by Martynas Ma\xc5\xbevydas, was published in 1547, relatively late compared to other European languages.
    • Like Latvian, Lithuanian was a key symbol of national identity during the Soviet occupation, and the language movement was central to the independence struggle.
    • The Lithuanian community in Australia, numbering a few thousand, was established by post-World War II displaced persons fleeing Soviet occupation. Melbourne and Sydney have Lithuanian community centres, Catholic churches, and Saturday schools. The community maintained strong anti-Soviet activism during the Cold War. Post-independence migration has been minimal.

    About Coorparoo

Coorparoo translation servicesCoorparoo is a southern suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, located approximately four kilometres from the city. Surrounding suburbs include Camp Hill, Holland Park, Greenslopes, East Brisbane, Norman Park and Seven Hills. The Coorparoo Clan lived south of the Brisbane River and generally camped along creeks. Their name comes from Kulpurum, which was the word for Norman Creek or a tributary of it. They continued to occupy watercourse campsites after white settlement, but other clans from the region began to move into South Brisbane. In 1846 there were reports[by whom?] of Aborigines raiding produce along Norman Creek. In 1853, there was a fight between Ningy Ningy, Bribie Island, Amity Point, and Logan peoples at Norman Creek. A visitor in 1855 reported many camps and fishing spots between Stones Corner and the mouth of Norman Creek. In 1959 an eighty-year-old woman told of frequent corroborees on the banks of the creek in Norman Park. Corroborees were also held at a little creek that crossed Norfolk Street.
