    The Latvian Language

    • Latvian is natively known as Latviešu valoda and belongs to the Indo-European, Balto-Slavic, Baltic, Eastern Baltic language family.
    • There are approximately 1.7 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Latvian is one of only two surviving Baltic languages (alongside Lithuanian), a branch of Indo-European that is among the most archaic in Europe.
    • Latvian has a distinctive system of diacritical marks, using macrons (\xc4\x81, \xc4\x93, \xc4\xab, \xc5\xab) for long vowels and cedillas/commas (\xc4\xa3, \xc4\xb7, \xc4\xbc, \xc5\x86) for palatalised consonants.
    • The Latvian language was a key element of the national awakening movement in the 19th century and the independence movements of 1918 and 1991.
    • Latvian has preserved features of Proto-Indo-European including pitch accent (in some dialects) and a rich case system with seven cases.
    • During the Soviet occupation (1940-1991), Latvian faced significant pressure from Russian, and the language's survival was a central concern of the independence movement.
    • The Latvian community in Australia, numbering a few thousand, was established primarily by post-World War II displaced persons who fled Soviet occupation. Communities in Melbourne and Sydney maintained Latvian Saturday schools, churches (Lutheran), and cultural associations. The community is ageing, but renewed interest has come from a small number of post-1991 migrants.

    About Cronulla

Cronulla is a beachside suburb, in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Cronulla is located 26 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Sutherland Shire. Cronulla is located on a peninsula framed by Botany Bay to the north, Bate Bay to the east, Port Hacking to the south, and Gunnamatta Bay to the west. The neighbouring suburb of Woolooware lies to the west of Cronulla, and Burraneer lies to the southwest. The Kurnell peninsula, the site of the first landfall on the eastern coastline made by Lt. (later Captain) James Cook in 1770, is reached by driving northeast out of Cronulla on Captain Cook Drive. Cronulla is derived from kurranulla, meaning ‘‘place of the pink seashells’’ in the dialect of the area's Aboriginal inhabitants, the Gweagal, who were a clan of the Tharawal (or Dharawal) tribe of Indigenous Australians. They were the traditional custodians of the southern geographic areas of Sydney. The beaches were named by Surveyor Robert Dixon who surveyed here in 1827-28 and by 1840, the main beach was still known as Karranulla.
