    The Greek Language

    • Greek is natively known as Ελληνικά and belongs to the Indo-European, Hellenic language family.
    • There are approximately 13.5 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Greek has the longest documented history of any living Indo-European language, with written records spanning over 3,400 years from the Mycenaean era to the present.
    • The Greek alphabet, developed around 800 BCE, was the first to include separate vowel and consonant letters, and became the ancestor of the Latin and Cyrillic scripts.
    • Modern Greek (Demotic) became the sole official language of Greece in 1976, replacing the formal Katharevousa variety, ending a diglossia that had lasted over a century.
    • Greek has contributed more words to the English language than any other language except Latin, particularly in scientific, medical, philosophical, and technical vocabulary.
    • The Greek word order is relatively flexible due to its inflectional nature, with four grammatical cases, three genders, and definite/indefinite articles.
    • Australia has one of the largest Greek diaspora communities in the world, with Melbourne often cited as having the largest Greek-speaking population outside Greece. Over 400,000 Australians claim Greek ancestry. Mass migration occurred in the 1950s-70s under assisted migration programs. Greek cultural life is vibrant, with Greek Orthodox churches, language schools, festivals like Antipodes, and precincts like Oakleigh in Melbourne and Marrickville in Sydney.

    About Ingleburn

Ingleburn is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 44 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of City of Campbelltown. It is part of the Macarthur region.

Ingleburn lies approximately half way between the two commercial centres of Liverpool and Campbelltown. The land in the Ingleburn area was originally inhabited by the Tharawal people prior to the arrival of settlers from the First Fleet in 1788. The first land grants in the area were made in 1809 to William Hall, William Neale, Joshua Alliot and Timothy Loughlin, all previously soldiers in the NSW Corps. As such, the area became known as "Soldier Flat". In 1869, a rail platform was built on the old Neale grant and given the name Macquarie Fields Station after a property to the north. However, in 1881 the Macquarie Fields estate subdivided to become the new village of Macquarie Fields. The fact that the station was a long way from the village caused confusion so a new name was sought for the station and Ingleburn was chosen in 1883. One theory has it was named after a local house formerly owned by Mary Ruse, daughter of pioneer James Ruse. Other records indicate it was named after a British town although the corresponding town hasn't been identified.Ingleburn is Scottish for "bend in the river" referring to the significant bend in the nearby Georges River.
