- Greek has the longest documented history of any living Indo-European language, with written records spanning over 3,400 years from the Mycenaean era to the present.
- The Greek alphabet, developed around 800 BCE, was the first to include separate vowel and consonant letters, and became the ancestor of the Latin and Cyrillic scripts.
- Modern Greek (Demotic) became the sole official language of Greece in 1976, replacing the formal Katharevousa variety, ending a diglossia that had lasted over a century.
- Greek has contributed more words to the English language than any other language except Latin, particularly in scientific, medical, philosophical, and technical vocabulary.
- The Greek word order is relatively flexible due to its inflectional nature, with four grammatical cases, three genders, and definite/indefinite articles.

Over 400,000 Australians claim Greek ancestry. Mass migration occurred in the 1950s-70s under assisted migration programs. Greek cultural life is vibrant, with Greek Orthodox churches, language schools, festivals like Antipodes, and precincts like Oakleigh in Melbourne and Marrickville in Sydney.
About Maroubra
Maroubra is a beachside suburb in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is 10 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the City of Randwick. Maroubra is the largest suburb in the area governed by Randwick City Council in both area and population; and Maroubra Junction is a locality in the centre of the suburb.
Maroubra is a local Aboriginal word meaning place of thunder. In 1861, the first house was built in the area by Humphrey McKeon. A number of other settlers arrived on the land in the 1870s to work on the wool scouring works located at the northern end of the bay.
In 2005, Maroubra was named as one of the suburbs involved in the Cronulla Riots, after more than 100 cars were vandalised in relation to the riots between Middle Eastern and Anglo youth. In 2006, Maroubra Beach became the second Australian beach to be named a National Surfing Reserve (the first beach being Bells Beach in Victoria). It is also an incredibly popular place for people learning to surf[19] due to its beginner friendly conditions.
