    The Finnish Language

    • Finnish is natively known as Suomi and belongs to the Uralic, Finnic language family.
    • There are approximately 5.8 million native speakers worldwide.
    • Finnish is one of the two official languages of Finland (alongside Swedish) and is one of the few non-Indo-European languages in the European Union.
    • Finnish has 15 grammatical cases, extensive agglutination (words built by adding suffixes), and vowel harmony, making it notably different from most European languages.
    • The longest Finnish word in everyday use is often cited as epäjärjestelmällistyttämättömyydellänsäkäänköhän, demonstrating the language's agglutinative nature.
    • Finnish is remarkably phonetic; words are pronounced exactly as they are written, with each letter having a single consistent sound.
    • The Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, compiled by Elias Lonnrot in 1835, was a major inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien in creating his Elvish languages.
    • Finnish migration to Australia has been modest, with small communities established since the gold rush era and post-World War II. The Finnish-born population numbers around 5,000, with communities in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Finnish clubs and saunas serve as social gathering points, and the community celebrates Finnish traditions such as Midsummer (Juhannus).

    About Pymble

Pymble is a suburb on the Upper North Shore of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Pymble is 16 kilometres (10 mi) north-west of the Sydney Central Business District in the local government area of Ku-ring-gai Council.

West Pymble is a separate suburb, surrounded by Lane Cove National Park. Based on settlers accounts the land that came to be known as Pymble was traversed by, and at least periodically inhabited by, what was by that time the "remains" of the Cammeraigal clan or tribe of the Kuringai (also known as Guringai) Aborigines. The Cammeraigal had owned the land between the Lane Cove River, Hawkesbury and east to the coast. They would travel from grounds at Cowan Creek to the Parramatta River via Pymble - passing west through the land where PLC now stands, through the Lane Cove Valley and North Ryde. En route they would reportedly hold corroborees at the current site of the Pymble Reservoir in Telegraph Rd and "camped on the hill...at the junction of Merrivale Rd and Selwyn St." According to Robert Pymble II "the Aborigines had faded out by about 1856, mainly because of smallpox."
