    The Indonesian Language

    • Indonesian is natively known as Bahasa Indonesia and belongs to the Austronesian, Malayo-Polynesian, Malay language family.
    • There are approximately 43 million native, 200 million total worldwide.
    • Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) was chosen as the national language of Indonesia at independence in 1945, despite being the native language of only a small fraction of the population, to unite the archipelago's hundreds of ethnic groups.
    • Indonesian is based on Riau Malay and is closely related to Malaysian Malay; the two are largely mutually intelligible, though they have diverged in vocabulary and spelling conventions.
    • Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country with over 270 million people and more than 700 living languages, making Indonesian essential as a lingua franca.
    • The language adopted the Latin alphabet during Dutch colonial rule, replacing earlier use of Arabic script (Jawi) and various indigenous scripts.
    • Indonesian grammar is relatively simple, with no grammatical gender, no verb conjugation for tense, and no articles, making it one of the easier Asian languages for English speakers to learn.
    • Indonesia is Australia's closest large neighbour, and the relationship is of significant strategic and economic importance. The Indonesian-born community in Australia numbers around 85,000, concentrated in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. Many Indonesians in Australia are students, with Indonesia being a major source of international students. Indonesian is one of the most commonly taught Asian languages in Australian schools.

    About Runcorn

Runcorn is a suburb on the south side of Brisbane, Queensland, and is about 19 kilometres (12 mi) from Brisbane’s central business district. Beenleigh and Warrigal Roads both run through the suburb and are the primary links towards inner city Brisbane and beyond. Much of the suburb is bordered by Bulimba Creek with the secondary source for the creek found within the suburb. The Jagera Aboriginal people occupied most of the land south of the Brisbane River and Runcorn would have been in the territory of the Chepara clan of Eight Mile Plains, Queensland.

During the Second World War the area was used by the United States Army and then by the British Navy. Runcorn has two primary schools, one high school and several shopping centres. It is a very ethnically diverse area, and is also favoured by students due to its proximity to Sunnybank, and its low rental prices (compared to suburbs closer to the city). The suburb also has an electrical substation, operated by Energex, that provides power to approximately 11,000 properties in a variety of surrounding areas.
