Slovak is natively known as Slovenčina and belongs to the Indo-European, Slavic, West Slavic language family.
There are approximately 5.2 million native speakers worldwide.
Slovak is the official language of Slovakia and is mutually intelligible to a high degree with Czech, though the two have been separate standard languages since the 19th century.
Slovak has three grammatical genders, six cases, and preserves a number of features from Old Church Slavonic.
The Slovak language played a central role in the Slovak national revival of the 19th century, when \xc4\xbdudov\xc3\xadt \xc5\xa0t\xc3\xbar standardised the modern literary language.
Slovakia has a strong tradition of folk culture and the Slovak language has many dialect variations, broadly divided into western, central, and eastern groups.
Slovak uses a rhythmic rule (rhythmick\xc3\xbd z\xc3\xa1kon) that prevents two long syllables from appearing in sequence, a feature unique among Slavic languages.
The Slovak community in Australia is small, with several thousand Slovak-born residents. Historical migration included post-WWII displaced persons and refugees after the 1968 Prague Spring. Many early migrants were recorded as Czechoslovak. Communities exist in Melbourne and Sydney with active Slovak social clubs and cultural organisations.
About Tempe
Tempe is a suburb in the inner west of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Tempe is located 9 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Marrickville Council. Tempe sits on the northern bank of the Cooks River and is separated from Sydney Airport by the Alexandra Canal, also known as Sheas Creek.
The Wolli Creek waterway also empties into the Cooks River near Tempe. Tempe was named after the mansion on the southern banks of the Cooks River in the area that is now known as Wolli Creek. Alexander Brodie Spark (1792–1856), an immigrant from Elgin, Scotland, built Tempe House in 1836. It was named after the 'Vale of Tempe', a beautiful valley in ancient Greek legend set at the foot of Mount Olympus in Greece. Tempe House, designed by John Verge (1772–1861), has a Georgian feel and is regarded as one of the great houses of Sydney.
Spark also donated money towards the purchase of land and the building of St Peter’s Church of England, which gave its name to the suburb of St Peters, to the north of Tempe.
